Craft a bourbon to suit your refined tastes.

As far a experiential vacations go, you’ll not find a better souvenir than a cask of whiskey or other spirit that you created. The expert staff at Moonshine University will, of course, be available to give as much advice and feedback as requested, but the product will be all yours as you call the shots during the week-long process.

The best week ever.

  • Create your own mashbill

We’ll spend Sunday afternoon sampling different products to help you zero in on a custom-designed mashbill to suit your tastes.

  • Mash it

Monday will be spent mashing two batches in our 250 gallon cooker. Why two? To make sure you have enough to fill a barrel.

  • Distill it

When the mash is ready, it’s distilling time. We’ll take you through a stripping run and a spirit run on Thursday and Friday.

  • Barrel it

Once the distillation process is finished, we’ll put it a barrel that you picked out and toasted or charred yourself.

  • Compound it

We’ll begin with some essence training and then by working with you to capture the flavors and aromas you desire.

  • Prototype it

Now that we know what you’re after, we’ll start mixing and measuring ingredients to create the recipe of your dreams on our table top stills.

  • Distill it

After dialing in your botanical blend on a table top still we’ll scale up to our 50 gallon carter head still.

  • Bottle it

No need to drink straight from the still, we’ll bottle it for you and then send it to a distributor to make sure everything is legal.

Spend a week
as a distiller.

Then keep what
you make.

What's Next?

As your spirit ages to desired maturation, we’ll send you samples every six months so you can soothe your anticipation and make sure things are progressing smoothly. In the meantime, while you’re here you’ll have the opportunity to earn the title of Executive Bourbon Steward, a $500 per person value.

Your week at-a-glance

You and a guest will be provided lunch and accommodations throughout your stay, plus you’ll be our guests at the initial dinner meeting in downtown Louisville.

Sunday

Check into the historic Brown Hotel then join us at Moonshine University for sensory evaluations and mash bill preparations. Then, join two of our staff for dinner.

Monday

We’ll mash two 250 gallon batches to ensure you have enough to fill a barrel.

Tuesday

Hop in the town car and enjoy VIP distillery tours from a selection of Kentucky’s finest distilleries.

Wednesday

Head out to Kelvin Cooperage to pick out your barrel and char it yourself.

Thursday

We’ll provide more sensory training to prepare you for the cuts and take your mash through its first distillation run.

Friday

Our last day is for the final distillation run, the spirit run. Our experts will be on hand to advise you on heads, hearts, and tails as you decide when to make the final cuts.

Day 1

We’ll start your week with some individual botanical training followed by the process of benchtop gin (or absinthe) compounding which will allow us to identify your desired flavors and aromas. The day will end with dinner on us.

Day 2

Today we’ll scale up your creation to 1 liter stills, then we’ll conduct some category training so you’ll have a good conversational grasp of the gin (or absinthe) category.

Day 3

This is the payoff day. We’ll scale up your recipe to 50 gallons then we’ll proof it all and bottle it for you.
